And the greatest of these is love...or is it pride?

Image result for advertisement lottery with money

When examining the picture, one can see that there are two pigs, seemingly visiting their newborns in the maternity ward. Behind them is a sign saying "Multiple your money." The bottom of the screen reveals four colorful lottery tickets. As a larger picture, it can be observed that the lottery is associated with an excess of money. Associating pigs with lottery tickets insinuates that both are capable of producing a large amount of something, whether that be offspring or money. Additionally, the lottery is a large part of the American culture.  Personally, I did not need an explanation in order to understand the picture because the joke is understood because of the immediate response associated with a picture of a lottery ticket. I believe this ad shows avarice because the lottery is a huge example of greed for a large sum of money.

The intended audience of this advertisement is the citizens of New York, since this is an advertisement for the New York lottery. The social and economic background is mostly likely middle to lower class because the higher class would not be likely to participate in the lottery. The cultural knowledge does not have to be significant because the lottery is present in other countries, however I am not aware of the impact the lottery has on the media in other countries.

The author utilized bright colors in the advertisement. The light blues and pastels mimic the coloring in the lottery tickets. The colors are bright in both the advertisement and the ticket in order to draw attention and appear pleasing to the eye. The blank background with the main point in the middle allows for the audience to be immediately drawn to the center of the advertisement. They used a limited amount of language in the advertisement to leave the image to interpretation by the audience. Also, the images presented allow for limited use of language because the image explains itself.  The creator of the advertisement used this ad in order to persuade and entertain. They used humor in order to convey their message and relate to a wide range of audiences. They used popular culture because in order for this ad to have an impact, the audience has to be aware of what the lottery is. The creator played on popular culture by assuming that the lottery is well-known, thus making the ad effective.

  1. I really enjoyed reading this blog and I personally think that this ad is really funny. Generally speaking pigs are supposed to represent greed (or at least I think) for example in an anime movie titled Spirited Away, the young girls parents turn into pigs as a punishment for their greed so I think you were right in using that for your deadly sin. I also think to an extent that could be said for lottery tickets. Overall great job on the explanation and focusing on the picture.

  2. I think it is interesting how they utilized the barbaric tone that comes with the symbolism of a pig. It is almost an underlying tone that shows how greedy people can become with their money, constantly craving more of it. I understood the overall message as well, and I liked how they used bright colors and humor as well in their advert.

  3. Good thoughts here- try to go through "the big 5" in your analysis and to include specific devices, techniques, or features. It will strengthen your argument and analysis because it will provide a strong base.
