Don't HYDE from this Blog Post!

Excerpt 1) "He is not easy to describe, there is something wrong with his appearance; something displeasing, something downright detestable. I never saw a man I so disliked, and yet I scarcely know why. He must be deformed somewhere; he gives a strong feeling of deformity, although I couldn't specify the point. He's an extraordinary-looking man, and yet I can name nothing out of the way." Excerpt 3) "To this rule, Dr. Jekyll was no exception; and as he now sat on the opposite side of the fire- a large, well-made, smooth-faced man of fifty, with something of a slyish cast perhaps, but every mark of capacity and kindness-you could see by his looks that he cherished for Mr. Utterson a sincere and warm affection." Step 1) It would be important to note first the obvious difference in point of view. The first excerpt describing Hyde is in first person, in the words of Enfield. The second excerpt is in third person when describing Jekyll. This overall gives o...

Netflix and Kill

Banquo's life story via Netflix Lilo and stitch: Lilo and stitch is about a girl named Lilo and her best friend Stitch, who she adopted as a little girl. Stitch is a genetic experiment from another planet who landed on Earth in a crash. This would be a good recommendation for Banquo because it is a heart-warming story about two best friends, like him and Macbeth! (for now). Also stitch is the weird friend, and is probably seen as the inferior person in the friendship. This is also revealed in the relationship with Macbeth, where Macbeth is given this amazing prophecy, and Banquo is just told that his sons will be king. However, despite their differences, they still have a special friendship. Split: Split is a movie about three teenage girls that get kidnapped by a man with 23 different personalities, they learn about his different personalities as they try to survive. This is a good recommendation for Banquo because it represents two things about the play. First,...

Witch-slapped: Macbeth's fall from grace

3. Do you believe events in your life have been guided by  fate  or chance? Why or why not? Based on the text, what do you think Shakespeare's attitude was towards fate? Does Macbeth have any choice in his actions or was everything predetermined?  Use examples from the text as your support. To some extent, I believe the events in my life have been guided by fate or chance. The reason I believe this to be true in relation to my life is because I believe many events have occurred without my control. For example, I met one of my best friends at a concert. She wasn't originally allowed to go to this concert, but went last minute, additionally, she ended up in the row right in front of me. Moments like this believe me to think that some occurrences are  motivated by chance. However, I always have doubt when thinking about the systematic aspect of every event that occurs. To relate this, one may say it is fate that one has 4 classes a day with their ...

Can't bury these tales: Canterbury Tales & Jane Eyre

Lord of the Bro's Freebie Me enjoying my time, photo creds: Rachel Gittelman

And the greatest of these is love...or is it pride?

**Shocker alert: Not a freebie** When examining the picture, one can see that there are two pigs, seemingly visiting their newborns in the maternity ward. Behind them is a sign saying "Multiple your money." The bottom of the screen reveals four colorful lottery tickets. As a larger picture, it can be observed that the lottery is associated with an excess of money. Associating pigs with lottery tickets insinuates that both are capable of producing a large amount of something, whether that be offspring or money. Additionally, the lottery is a large part of the American culture.  Personally, I did not need an explanation in order to understand the picture because the joke is understood because of the immediate response associated with a picture of a lottery ticket. I believe this ad shows avarice because the lottery is a huge example of greed for a large sum of money. The intended audience of this advertisement is the citizens of New York, since this is an advertisement fo...

What's in a name?

"Are you guys related?" A question I have been asked my entire life, and the answer is most likely no. Growing up around people of the Jewish faith, the last name "Kaplan" is common in my community. However, I never looked deeper into meaning, because my last name irritated me. When researching my last name, I was not surprised to find that the origin was Jewish. It also comes from the name "Cohen", another name with Jewish origin. In contrast, my first name is quite obviously different than the other Rachel's and Ava's I grew up with. When researching the name "Hayley", the name has derived from an English town meaning "hay clearing."The name Hayley is Anglo-Saxon, other spellings such as Haley are of English origin. However, as I grew up my last name bothered me less. I came to terms with my culture, thus appreciating how my last name connected me to my Jewish faith. Quite literally my last name does define me. It defines ...
